The Tansu (Chests) from that region are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, distinctive design elements, and practical functionality. They feature sturdy construction, intricate metal fittings, and elaborate hand-carved motifs, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage and artisanal traditions. These chests were historically used for storing clothing, valuables, and household items, serving as both functional storage solutions and decorative pieces within the home.

At the top centre of this antique chest, intricate metalwork features a striking drawstring bag (‘Kinchaku / 巾着袋’) motif on the lock fitting. Additionally, the middle frame boasts a remarkable metal cover depicting a powerful waterfall scene. These standout metal elements, complemented by the impressive lacquer color, imbue this Antique Japanese Chest with an overwhelming presence.

The bottom sliding doors are lockable in the middle section.
