This remarkable lacquered Tansu (chest) belongs to the esteemed lineage of ‘Nihonmatsu (二本松)’ Tansu. Nihonmatsu Tansu boasts a 300-year-old tradition, cherished and preserved by the inhabitants of the castle city nestled in the ‘Fukushima’ region.

The meticulous techniques employed in crafting these Tansu reflect the expertise honed by carpenters who contributed to the construction of Nihonmatsu domain’s castle, crafting fittings and furniture. These skills have been faithfully passed down through generations, continuing to enrich the legacy of Nihonmatsu Tansu to this day.

Brass is commonly used for the key lock fittings of Nihonmatsu Tansu, typically adorned with motifs such as cedar, chrysanthemum, and butterfly. This particular antique piece showcases depictions of Mount ‘Fuji (富士)’, a hawk, and an aubergine. This combination is inspired by a proverb originating from the ‘Edo (江戸)’ period (1603-1868), symbolising the progression of fortune. It is believed that having a dream of these symbols on the night of the New Year brings good luck. Mount Fuji symbolises elevation, the hawk represents heights, while the aubergine embodies growth and development.
