‘Kokeshi’ dolls are traditional wooden toy dolls originating from the ‘Tohoku (東北)’ region, the northern part of Japan’s main island, where they have been sold as souvenirs to visitors of hot spring resorts since the late Edo period (1804-). These dolls are considered one of Japan’s traditional crafts and are crafted by skilled artisans.

Typically, Kokeshi dolls feature a simple design with a spherical head and a cylindrical body. Originally developed as toy dolls, they were crafted to be easy for young children to hold, with narrow bodies that fit comfortably in children’s hands. In fact, some Kokeshi dolls were designed without the ability to stand upright.

Crafted using a potter’s wheel, Kokeshi dolls are then meticulously painted with various motifs, patterns, and facial expressions. Each doll represents a unique regional style or theme, reflecting the cultural heritage of its origin. These charming dolls are highly valued for their cultural significance and artistic craftsmanship, making them sought-after collectibles and cherished gifts.
