Japanese ‘Isho Tansu (衣装箪笥)’ are traditional chests used for storing clothing, textiles, and personal belongings. “Isho” translates to “clothing” or “apparel,” indicating the primary purpose of these chests.

These chests typically feature a variety of drawers, compartments, and sliding panels, allowing for efficient organization of clothing and accessories. The design of Isho Tansu often reflects the needs of the users, with specialised compartments for different types of garments, such as kimono (着物), obi (帯, sashes), and accessories like fans and combs.

Paulownia (桐/kiri tree) is the most suitable material for chest of drawers for the Japanese climate. It prevents moisture from entering and suppresses mold growth. When a full paulownia chest gets humid outside, the surface of the chest absorbs the humidity and the it expands, preventing each gap in the chest. Also, if the humidity drops, it will shrink. In this way, the kimono stored in the kimono is protected.

Crafted to accommodate the length of a kimono, this Japanese Antique Isho Tansu features wide, flat drawers ideally suited for storing long dresses or other garments.

The attractive natural aging on the facade adds character to the piece. Meticulously restored and fully functional, the tansu comes with a set of keys for ease of use and security.

Included is a stand for convenient placement in a modern home. Its ideal height makes it perfect for displaying decorative items on top, enhancing its traditional Japanese aesthetic appeal.
