‘Yatara-knitting’ Antique Japanese Bamboo Basket

This wild looking Antique Japanese bamboo vase was made with the Yatara-knitting technique. It is a technique in which bamboo strips of various lengths and thicknesses are woven irregularly from different directions. By knitting to cover the stitches and fill in the gaps, a vase finishes unique and beautiful.

With a history dating back centuries, bamboo baskets have been an integral part of Japanese culture, often used in tea ceremonies, flower arranging (生花 / ikebana), and everyday life.
