‘Imari (伊万里)’ ware is one of Japan’s six major pottery, renowned for its rich history and distinctive characteristics. It was originated in the town of ‘Arita,’ in the middle of the Japan’s main island, ‘Honshu,’ during the early 17th century, around 1616.

Imari ware gained popularity in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, imported via the Dutch East India Company.

Imari ware is celebrated for its high-quality porcelain, which is known for its fine texture, translucency, and durability. One of the most notable characteristics of Imari ware is its underglaze blue and white decoration. Intricate designs featuring motifs such as landscapes, flora, fauna, and mythical creatures are hand-painted onto the porcelain using cobalt blue pigment before firing.

In addition to blue and white decoration, Imari ware often incorporates vibrant overglaze enamels in colors such as red, green, and gold. These enamels are applied after the initial firing and add richness and depth to the designs, creating visually stunning pieces.
