Japanese ‘Isho Tansu (衣装箪笥)’ are traditional chests used for storing clothing, textiles, and personal belongings. “Isho” translates to “clothing” or “apparel,” indicating the primary purpose of these chests.

These chests typically feature a variety of drawers, compartments, and sliding panels, allowing for efficient organization of clothing and accessories. The design of Isho Tansu often reflects the needs of the users, with specialised compartments for different types of garments, such as kimono (着物), obi (帯, sashes), and accessories like fans and combs.

Made of ‘Keyaki wood (Japanese zelkova),’ this compact antique Japanese Isho Tansu (衣装箪笥) is from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Keyaki tree is historically used for a wide range of purposes in Japan. Characterised by less warping and is resistant to moisture, also hard and resistant to wear, it has frequently been used for furnitures and fittings.

The wood grain of this Japanese Antique Isho Tansu is exquisitely beautiful. The lacquered finish of this piece gleams with an extraordinary shine, adding a touch of elegance to its overall appearance.

Designed for effortless integration into a modern household, it comes complete with a stand. Expertly restored, waxed, and fully functional, it even includes a set of keys for added convenience.

The drawers feature a simple and clean design, accented by iron plates and handles, adding to the overall charm of this elegant piece.
